I'm a creative whose interest in the decorative and graphic qualities of visual design has led to an illustrative style that combines pattern, figurative and ornamental elements. My love of colour and mindful approach also brings a particular characteristic to my work.
The examples of illustration, pattern design and decorative artwork in my portfolio are the result of a lifelong enjoyment and passion for living a creative life. Making 'little worlds on paper' has always been my thing.
Individual style comes together over a long time, and I find it continues to develop with each fresh piece of artwork. I often reflect on my methods recognising little quirks that seem particular to me, seeing my own hand in what I have created. This can be both rewarding and frustrating at the same time!
Inspiration includes the Arts and Crafts movement, illustration of the ‘Golden Age', Japanese woodblock prints in the shin-hanga style of Hasui Kawase, Scandinavian folk art and vintage art instruction books.
Mixed media is my preferred method, combining gouache, colour pencils, watercolour, ink and metallics. Although I have a breadth of digital skills and incorporate those techniques where helpful, I find solace in using traditional art materials - the scratch of the pencil, flow of ink, or translucency of watercolour... the physicality and unpredictability of the tangible media is enjoyable and good for me.
Since January 2024 I have been ranked in Creativepool's list of 'Top 25 influential and inspiring illustrators', and more recently my Elven Forest pattern was showcased in their article, The Ultimate Guide to Hiring a Surface Pattern Designer in 2025.
Hope you enjoy my website!
Digitising hand-painted gouache artwork is my preferred method for creating all-over designs (e.g. Elven Forest and Florrie), but some of my patterns are fully vector (e.g. Floribunda and Mandala Moods).
I feel passionately about the importance of traditional drawing skills, the ability to see, observe and bring your own creative vision to life. My illustrative style relies on these skills.
Helpful for creating my own painting templates as well as producing endlessly scaleable artwork for use on products. Boho Birds and Blue Tits & Daisies would be examples of this.
Vector drawing, by its nature, brings particular qualities to an illustrative style. In the context of my own work these reflect an interest in clearly defined forms and an emphasis on the graphic, linear elements within design.
Various projects, including my 2024 Lunar Calendar, contain hand-drawn illustrative elements.
Created from my own photographs or stock imagery to complement my personal illustrative style.
I stitched the bag from my own printed fabric, putting my illustrative style to practical use!
