Mixed media painting of an imaginary scene with 'lollipop' trees beneath a silvery moon.

Dusk

Watercolour, gouache and ink
189 mm x 189 mm (2018)

Lollipop trees, lilac skies and a silvery moon combine in this imaginary landscape. I completely abandoned realism to favour the graphic qualities of design here.

The lilac, lemon and turquoise colour scheme is unusual set off against the strong dark outlining. Juxtaposition of shapes, and exploration of decorative elements, really seem to be the subject here.

Landscapes are not a theme I paint very often, but when I do I am drawn to the simplification of shapes and ornamental aspects of the scene.

This idea was developed further in my ‘Winter Forest’ pattern, which is an ever-repeating undulating dove grey and white Scandi landscape.
